Marriages of Convenience

There's way too much family pressure in China to get married. Since homosexuality isn't accepted there, gay people are usually forced into marriages of convenience, regardless of whether they have come out to their parents or not.

Many gay and lesbian individuals are living a lie. It is very common for lesbian women and gay men to marry each other in order to fool their parents and friends they are in a heterosexual relationship. Whilst others pretend not to be gay and marry a heterosexual individual in order to cover up their sexuality. This is usually referred to as a 'marriage of convenience'.

Homosexuality is not treated seriously in China. People tend to think that it's just 'a phase' and will eventually you will come to your senses and became 'normal' again. As long as you don't identify yourself as 100% gay people will assume you will snap out of your 'abnormality.'

Human sexuality is still a taboo topic in China therefore most people don't know much about it. They probably do realize that there are people who 'deviate from the norm' but most people especially the older generation just choose to label them as 'abnormal' which is quite sad.

Many parents think homosexuality is a mental illness. It's still hard for Chinese parents to accept that their children are homosexual, no matter their gender.
